THE GREAT FISH RIVER, A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT
The Great Fish River meanders for 644 km (400 miles) through South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province and flows out into the Indian Ocean. It once formed a hotly contested border during the Frontier Wars of 1779-1878 with the Xhosa people on one side and the Dutch farmers and English settlers on the other.
GREAT FISH RIVER - HOME OF THE BLUE CRANE
Nowadays, this region is flourishing with unique fauna and riverine thicket, creating the ideal habitat for endangered species such as the blue crane (South Africa’s national bird). The succulent bushveld and rugged terrain is also favoured by black rhino, cape buffalo, hippo and kudu.
The Great Fish River Reserve boasts 45 000 hectares (111 195 acres) of prime wilderness land, comprising the Andries Vosloo Kudu, Double Drift and Sam Knott nature reserves. The Great Fish River winds its way through &Beyond Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, and Kwandwe’s four luxurious lodges are all situated within close proximity to the River.
